Water rafting in Sutlej, near Shimla
In the Indian Himalayas, the Sutlej is one of the most difficult rivers to travel. Around the Tattapni parts of the Sutlej, rafting is available. The town gets its name from the sulphur springs in the region. Shimla is 50 kilometres away, and it is easily accessible by car.
Three different rafting stretches have been found here, each with a different degree of difficulty. The first is a 3-kilometer stretch near Sunni, a little village on the banks of the Sutlej. It’s the simplest of the bunch, and even non-swimmers will like it.
The next section in Chabba is 12 kilometres long, relatively difficult, and more enjoyable than the one in Sunni. The river features grade II rapids in this segment, and it takes about an hour and a half to reach Tattapani.
Pandowa is the starting point for one of the most popular rafting trips. Although novices should stop at Patakhra, when the river takes a terrible turn with Grade VI rapids slamming across the river channel, the first length in the region is a 20-kilometer stretch from Luhri to Pandowa.
Another section is the 25-kilometer stretch from Pandowa to Tattapani, which features Class III and IV rapids. From Pandowa to Kadhai Ka Fer, the final portion of the river is 30 kilometres long.
Water rafting in Ravi near Chamba
Slowly but slowly, the Chamba Valley has been able to carve out a place for itself on the country’s adventure map by offering white river rafting on a larger scale.
Water Rafting in Chandrabhagga (Chenab) in Lahaul
The opening of the Lahaul and Spiti area for water activities, including river rafting, took place in September 2011. River rafting in the region begins in Koksar, the region’s entry to Lahaul Spiti. From there, it’s a 90-kilometer trip to Tandi, where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet to form the Chnadrabhaga (Chennab), which flows through Pattan Valley.
From here, you can take a different path. This one runs on the Keylong-Leh Route for 70 kilometres from Darcha to Udaipur.
Water Rafting in Beas near Kullu
Rafting along the mighty Beas in Kullu and Manali is also a thrilling experience. Kullu’s rafting season begins in April and lasts until the end of June, just before the monsoons arrive.
Pirdi, 4 kilometres ahead of Kullu, serves as the starting point. A 14-kilometer stretch from here to Jhiri includes Grade II and III rapids, making it appropriate for even novices. Pirdi is 45 kilometres away from Manali so stay at night in Kullu is always recommend.
The river Beas has an excellent reputation among kayakers, and it also offers plenty of opportunities for water rafting, with Grade V rapids above Manali, Grade IV rapids in Manali, and Grade III rapids below the town.
